Capodimonte has an interesting history dating back to the time with Charles of Bourbon was king of Naples in the mid 1700s. As the story goes, the making of hard porcelain was a well-kept secret amongst the Chinese and Japanese during Charles’ reign and many of Europe’s finest chemists were desperately trying to unlock the secret to spread the trade onto the European continent. The few businesses that were successful in this attempt were leery of sharing the secret with others so each succeeding endeavor had to start from scratch in their experimentation.
